Situation:
It's a situation that everyone's familiar with: User Felix would like to start work by switching on his computer and logging on as usual. This is something he does every morning, but this morning he can't remember his password, no matter how hard he tries. Every four weeks he has to think up a new password; at least 8 characters long, consisting of letters, numerals and special characters. It was only yesterday that he thought the last one up – but now it's gone, beyond the reaches of memory. The boss is waiting for the report that's due today – but no logon, no computer, no report …

Complications:
Of course Felix knows the procedure for this situation: Call the user helpdesk, wait until it's his turn (and that takes ages this time of the morning), put up with the comments ("Getting a bit forgetful, are we?"), spell his name, tell them that he works in Development, tell them his user ID and which system it was that he forgot his password for … After that, he'll have to fill out a written request and ask the boss to sign it. All the while, he's wasting valuable time that he really needed for his report.

Solution:
The solution could be so simple if the user helpdesk had a program that Felix could call up himself. This program would always be available, either on a colleague's PC (the colleague hasn't forgotten her password!), or following a standard logon as a guest. Of course Felix would have to answer some questions, questions that he had thought up himself and that only he has the answers to. Once the program is convinced that Felix really is who he says he is it gives him a new password, and, if that's what he wants, one that's valid for all systems he uses.
